it looks like we may be going that route, and i'm curious about how long it took you to learn how to access it. also about the types of tricks you use to keep your little one preoccupied and what the actual surgery is like.
i am completely speculating at this point, as we are still awaiting some lab results, but i am a big fat planner and would like to know the dirt.

Hi Sara, I can say I REALLY love having Reece's port. The surgery itself was not bad at all, took about an hour and with no problems. The hard part was being in the hospital for 4 days and him wanting to run around. The life saver for us was a portable DVD player. I also wrapped a match box car for him to open as a gift each day. We did a lot of walking around in his stroller too. I brought his fitted crib sheet and all his toys and blankets for his crib. We also bought a blow up mattress for us to sleep on in the room (HUGE HELP). We started learning how to access from our nurses in the hospital and I wrote down step by step how they did it. It only took us about 2 weeks to start doing it alone at home. We strap him in his highchair and I put the DVD player on in front of him. Since we also use the numbing cream (EMLA)he never even knows when we stick him. He laughs and talks to me the whole time he does it now!
